Xbox One Non Wirelss Controller Driver Windows 7

  • I could not get the controller to work on windows 7 either and ended up just updating to windows 10. I figured it was just my gaming pc anyways so I was going to have to do it at some point.
Here are the instructions from Microsoft which were useless for me.

  • Took me three hours to get my Xbox one controller to work. Installed with cable - have yet to install the wireless adapter. I found my solution on the following site. Scroll down to user TheNut007 . Here's the link https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/27fog1/psa_for_the_new_xbox_one_controller_drivers_how/
Why Microsoft made the installation for the Xbox One controller so friggin cumbersome is beyond me.

  • I'm amazed that Oculus don't provide a download location (or at least clear instructions) for an item which they include in the Rift package!? Windows 7 SP1 is in the list of minimum requirements, for gawd's sake.
  • The driver linked here worked perfectly for me
    https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3qgeoz/xbox_acc_driver_is_unavailable_cant_get_the_xbox/
The Dropbox link for windows 7.
  • @Cleave : thanks very much, that's very helpful.
It's good to see that the Oculus site is developing, but it seems like this kind of thing should be higher on the list of priorities. In the section headed 'Connect Your Xbox One Wireless Controller' on this page:
    https://product-guides.oculus.com/en-us/documentation/rift/latest/concepts/rgsg-2-hw-hardware-setup/
There isn't a mention of drivers, and the only troubleshooting tip is:
'Note: If the controller doesn't connect, make sure that the Xbox controller is powered on—the Xbox button is lit—first. Then try holding down the little sync buttons on the Xbox wireless adapter and the Xbox controller at the same time. Otherwise the pairing window may time out.'
  • The Xbox 1 dongle is not supported in windows 7, it was 1 ofMicrosoft’s ways of getting people to upgrade to 10.

  • same problem for me on windows 10 trying to pair the dongle with the controller,i cracked it in the end though I need to go to devices and update the xbox controller which did the trick

The Xbox 1 dongle is not supported in windows 7, it was 1 ofMicrosoft’s ways of getting people to upgrade to 10.

In that case, Oculus' minimum requirements should be Windows 10, not Windows 7 SP1.
  • The bundled dongle was recently updated to support Windows 7.
If you can't get it working, you could try selling it off to buy one that does works fine with Windows 7 right out of the box (which would be just about any wireless PC gamepad EXCEPT that one).
  • @Cleave I tried those drivers and It got my computer to recognize its an xbox wireless adapter and put it in network adapters, but when i go to open it in device manager it says 'Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)' and when I look at driver details all of them say system32.

@JED44 Did you try the 64 bit version? that's the one that worked for me.

The driver details say system32 but still works on my system x86-64.
Tried on Intel and AMD works on both btw.

@cybereality should staple this post, or create an announcement explaining this fix, assuming its tested etc

  • @Cleave yes I did, then when that didnt work I tried every other one, before going back and trying to again, but thank you. In any case I threw in the towel and upgraded to windows 10. Figured it would have to happen eventually and I might as well nab it while its still free. Microsoft won this one!
  • After waiting for 6 months for my CV1 finally getting it late in the evening I was completely chocked that I couldn't get the xbox controller working on windows 7 after several hours. NOT good enough Oculus! Microsoft as a 'partner' pointed me to webpage that I had to have IE 6 or later to access?!?! Who the hell uses IE anymore? No alternative, just an infinite loop!
For the effort you have put into creating a 'seemless' experience and for the cost, you could have thrown in a 256 MB! thumb drive with the drivers on it for pennies.
Finally out of frustration and at 2:00 am I booted into STEAM(!!!!) so I could run Assetto Corsa with my steering wheel. We are NOT off to a good start!
P.S. MCP, MCSE, ITIL, PMP etc.. working on PC's for nearly 30 years and 'I' was ready to pull my hair out. Good luck to the uninitiated masses!!
  • @DaVinster The complete lack of any kind of direct driver download shocked and appalled me. I ended up biting the bullet and just upgrading to 10. its ok. Microsoft won this one
